Murder mysteries and more: Earth Hour at Dalhousie

By Brittany Maguire, campus outreach assistant at Dalhousie
Dalhousie’s Facilities Management will be participating in Earth Hour by scaling back the electrical use of motors and pumps through the Building Automation System and promoting turning off the lights to their employees. Electrical data will be analyzed after Earth Hour to see if overall power consumption was reduced on campus during the hour.
Students, faculty and staff are being encouraged by Dalhousie’s Office of Sustainability to publicly pledge their Earth Hour participation on the Sustainability News @ Dal blog. Two prizes are up for grabs:
For faculty and staff: The faculty/department with the highest percentage of pledgers will win a Lunch & Learn session that includes a delicious free lunch and training on how to conduct an energy and water audit of your home. They will then get to borrow one of Dalhousie’s new energy audit kits for a month, which can be rotated around for everyone to take home and put to use!
For students: There will be a raffle draw out of pledged names for a dinner gift certificate for two to the Wooden Monkey, a local restaurant focused on using local, organic and healthy ingredients.
Residence Eco-Olympics
Residence Eco-Olympics, an educational program and competition to reduce energy and water consumption in Dalhousie’s residences, is happening from March 14- March 27. In the spirit of Earth Hour and the Eco-Olympics, all residence meal halls are dimming their lights for this week leading up to Earth Hour.
A number of residences are hosting small-scale Earth Hour events including an Earth Hour Slumber Party and screening of John Hughes movies in Gerard Hall. On Sunday night, Dalhousie Mini-residences will be hosting a belated Earth Hour celebration in the Lyall Lounge.
Earth Hour Murder Mystery Party
What happens when all the lights go off…
This year at Dalhousie’s candle-lit Earth Hour party in the Main Dining Room of the University Club, there will an unfortunate death. Five suspects will be identified. Who? Why? How?
In a Clue-style celebration of Earth Hour, Dalhousie will be hosting a live action Murder Mystery Party where the party guests will become detectives trying to solve the mystery of an Earth Hour murder. LED Flashlights, donated by Efficiency Nova Scotia, will help the guests with their detective work. Accusations will be cast, murderers revealed and rewards given to those who accurately solved the mystery. Once the crime is solved, guests will recover their lost Earth Hour, mingling and whispering in astonishment about the identity of the murderer by candle light long into the night.
