Save Africa’s elephants: Help ban the Thai ivory trade

Add your voice to the petition here.

Elephant poaching is being driven by demand for ivory carvings and trinkets in Asia where many consumers think “elephant teeth” simply fall out and re-grow without hurting the animal. The truth is that ivory comes from dead elephants.

More about this campaign

In Thailand, elephants are revered as sacred. There is a saying that there would be no Thailand without the elephant. But Thailand is also the biggest unregulated market for ivory in the world. Although it is against the law to sell ivory from African elephants in Thailand, ivory from domestic Thai elephants can be sold legally. As a result, massive quantities of illegal African ivory are being laundered through Thai shops.

To save Africa’s elephants it is essential that Thailand closes this legal loophole. Join us in asking Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to ban all ivory trade in Thailand.

Representatives from 176 governments will be meeting in Bangkok March 3-14 to discuss global wildlife trade issues, including the elephant poaching crisis. While the eyes of the world are turned to Thailand, we want to present 1 million signatures to Mrs Sinawatra.

Sign the petition and tell the Thai Prime Minister to ban ivory trade and save Africa’s elephants!

“Dear Prime Minister Sinawatra, we are greatly concerned about the record levels of elephant poaching in Africa. Demand for illegal ivory products could drive the species to extinction in Africa, and Thailand’s elephants could be next. You can save them. We urge you to ban all ivory trade in Thailand to give elephants their best chance of survival.”

Someone has to be the first to stop this

Dear Prime Minister Yingluck Sinawatra ,

Here in Canada we mismanaged our cod fishery. As a consequence the population has crashed, and after a decade shows no sign of recovery.

Across animal species and around the world we are seeing the same pattern again and again with wild populations.

There must be a balance. The current situation with the African elephant is completly untenable. I would urge you and your south eastern Asian neighbors to establish a more equitable relationship with the elephant.

  • Lynna

    Dear Mr.Sinawatra,

If elephants were the most intelligent species and humans were not, it would be terrifying if they sold carvings of our bones and teeth. It would be inhumane and heartless. Elephants don’t speak our language but they are not okay with this. YOU can stop this; we can’t let yet another species go extinct because of our thoughtless unnecessary actions.

  • Karen Watson

    Please stop this dirty deed
    It is totally not needed.

I am greatly concerned about the record levels of elephant poaching in Africa. Demand for illegal ivory products could drive the species to extinction in Africa, and Thailand’s elephants could be next. YOU CAN SAVE THEM! I urge you to ban all ivory trade in Thailand to give elephants their best chance of survival. They are a precious species and we should be honoured to have them in our world

  • Jocelyne Sewell

As Thai Prime Minister you have the duty and the power to ban ivory trade and save Africa’s elephants! Animals were put on earth for the pleasure of all and not the greed of some. Elephants should be allowed to live a free life

  • Ken Baker

To sacrifice even one more of these beautiful, gentle, intelligent creatures for the sake of a “carving?” Please encourage your artists to express themselves in a less lethal media for our worlds good. If you are not a part of the solution to the sacrifice of these living treasures in our world then you are part of the problem. Please use your influence and power for the good of our living world and stop the import of ivory into your country. Your compassion will leave a legacy that will be treasured world wide please stop it now.

Please! Prime Minister Yingluck Sinawatra – BAN ALL IVORY TRADE IN THAILAND! I am shocked and disgusted to hear that this – Ivory Trade in Thailand – is still going on and allowed by the Thai government. I feel strongly and disagree with this killing of the Elephants for Ivory in Africa as well as in Thailand. Allowing poachers to sell the illegal Ivory from Africa in Thailand, needs to stop; poachers and launderers must be dealt with, using the strict laws that apply to these activities. Stop the extinction of the African Elephants! The only way this can end is by banning all Ivory trade!

  • Eleanor Punshon

Do what ever you can to save these wonderful creatures.

  • Greta Jones

It is not only Thailand that is poaching elephants — and where the demand for ivory comes from — it comes mainly from China!! We need to pressure these countries and all Asian countries that import ivory to stop their plunder of elephants and their ivory immediately.

This is a genocide and countries that import ivory must be held to account.

  • Megan Burkett

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, we are asking you to stop the trading of ivory.

  • Barbara Best

PLEASE – don’t wait until it is too late.
NOW is the time to act upon it – we are all busy with our lives but we must make the time to speak for those that are unable to speak for themselves.
HELP these beautiful loving majestic mammals. Perhaps if we could educate the public by demonstrating in pictures or video how they mourn their loss … the same way as we mourn ours. You can visably see the heartbreak, tears and emotion they suffer … the same way we do when we lose a loved one.
The collection and display of “remains” no longer carries the same status quo as perhaps it once did in certain circles – we now look upon it as a pitiful display of greed.

  • Joanne

Stop this horrible, horrible abuse and the killing of elephants! TODAY!

All of the harm towards animals just for humans to look/feel better, is disgusting! Just because generations past and cultures historically had these practises does not mean they are to continue……haven’t any of these communities evolved?? Where is the Gov.’t fundings to help develop new and lessharmful methods of “making a living?”

  • Laura

It is a disgrace that elephants are killed for their tusks so that people can adorn themselves with ornaments and enjoy decorations. Please change your laws so that elephants in both Africa and ThaIland can survive and live out their natural lives.

  • Sharron

Save these wonderful and intelligent creatures.

  • Barbara Golder

We need a UN Charter of Rights for Animals and an international defence force to stop this massacre happening to any creature. The story of elephants is especially terrible as the same people supplying arms to rebels are buying ivory – people without scruples all sanctioned by the Chinese government. I would happily boycott Chinese goods to make a point – I would happily not buy their products even though it will make life more expensive and maybe more sparse. If this will help save elephants and rhinos and any of the creatures threatened by extinction through greed then I will live without.

  • Frances Renaud & William Simpson

“Dear Prime Minister Sinawatra, we urge you to ban all ivory trade in Thailand immediately. It is imperative that we do whatever we can to help these magnificent creatures everywhere.

Please ban all imports from animals, especially the elephant, that are being killed for the greed displayed. Who do we (humans) think we are by destroying a breed for the sake of trinkets??

  • Josh Buzzell

A sustainable economy provides food, a non-sustainable and poaching dependant economy leaves destruction and hunger in it wake. So, which do you choose?

    We have to save them!

Mankind has become saturated with greed. Nothing is sacred anymore. Respect for Mother Earth has dissipated into the air, mixed with the stench of rotting corpses. Skeletons of these great creatures, and others, litter the forest floor, raped not only of their life but the beauty it brought to nature. It is sad to think that someday children will only see pictures and hear stories of the great and majestic creatures that once roamed the Earth! We did not inherit this Earth, we borrowed it from our children’s children.

  • Marilyn Palmer

We should start respecting animals. The Human Race is judged on how we treat other lives. Stop being such a disgrace!
