The City of North Vancouver is very excited to be in the running as one of the top 5 finalists in the We Love Cities people’s choice award! And we’re proud to be one of 33 city finalists in the 2014 Earth Hour City Challenge, chosen from 164 entrants from around the world. Here are some of the reasons we love our city.

Environmental protection and climate action have long been a part of the City of North Vancouver’s core values, policies and programs. From urban planning, building design and infrastructure to corporate practices, municipal operations and community outreach, we are continually looking for ways to reduce our carbon footprint.

Through the Earth Hour City Challenge we’re happy to have the opportunity to celebrate our success and find support and energy for new initiatives. Since 2005, we’ve reduced our corporate emissions by 11 percent and our community-wide emissions have decreased by 10 per cent per capita.
We’re proud of our accomplishments, but recognize we’ve got a long way to go yet. This past week City Council approved a plan for new AAA (All Ages & Abilities) cycling network that will create connected biking options that are fun and safe for all.

The City of North Vancouver continues to lead the way in progressive sustainability initiatives that contribute to the reduction of community-wide energy consumption.
Buildings in the City of North Vancouver contribute to approximately 50 percent of greenhouse gas emissions and 70 percent of energy consumption. Through the Energy Efficient Buildings Initiative we’ve been able to influence how to make our new and existing buildings more energy efficient buildings using progressive energy performance zoning requirements and retrofit programs.

The City of North Vancouver is thrilled to be a part of the Earth Hour City Challenge and is excited to have a forum to share our successes and challenges with climate action.
