Be still my heart – Ryan Gosling goes 'green'

By Tess Finlay (WWF-Canada communications intern)
As I was scrolling through my daily online news coverage this morning, I came across yet another Ryan Gosling call out to the ladies, but I was pleased to find that this time it was for a cause!

Gosling has teamed up with the non-profit organization DoSomething.org to promote their latest recycling initiative, “Don’t be Trashy.” This charity encourages teens to take action on  causes that matter most to them by providing ideas  and platforms in which they can share with their communities to generate awareness.
We’ve tried this concept ourselves. In 2010, WWF partnered with Leonardo DiCaprio for the ‘Save the Tigers’ campaign, where we aimed to build political, financial and public support to double the number of wild tigers by 2022. This partnership has proven to be a great success so far.
So tell me, would seeing Ryan Gosling’s brooding face alongside a call to action make you want to recycle? I won’t deny that it made my heart flutter a bit to know that this heart throb was also an environmental do-gooder and it made me wonder – do celebrity endorsements and high profile personalities have any effect on which social or environmental issues we choose to support?
At the end of the day, I think that it shouldn’t matter that it was Mr. Gosling who tugged on my heart strings and made me recycle that box of tissues after watching The Notebook. What should matter is that I recycled that tissue box, and will continue to recycle in the future.
What do you think?
