Black Out Speak Out a success, thanks to YOU.

I thanked you last week for reading a blog about Black Out Speak Out and asking you to support the movement. Today, on World Environment Day, I would like to thank you again because you came through for us.

Thanks to the help of Canadians like you, Black Out Speak Out has reached more Canadians than we ever thought possible. We drummed up nearly 600 partner groups to help us spread the message about the threats to nature and democracy in Canada.
With your support, #blackoutspeakout trended on twitter yesterday, almost 10,000 people joined the campaign on Facebook, and countless others changed their Facebook profile pictures, and got the word out to their friends. Our website got over 170,000 hits, and 36,000 emails were sent to members of parliament opposing Bill C-38. And, check out all the great media coverage we got! Including this interview I did on CTV News Channel.
With the number of individuals and organizations speaking out as part of Black Out Speak Out, the campaign has proven to be a success. But it is not all that we are doing. Just last week, WWF presented our concerns regarding the changes to the Fisheries Act before the Senate Standing Committee on Energy, the Environment and Nature Resources as well as the House Finance subcommittee on Bill C-38.
Our main message to Members of Parliament and Canadian Senators is this: The changes to the Fisheries Act and changes to environmental regulation being brought forward in this bill stands to undermine the very important progress that has been made over the last 30 years.
As long as our environmental laws and our voices are under threat, our fight is not over. Revisions will be proposed to the Species at Risk Act this fall that threaten our land, air and climate.
Over the course of the summer we will continue to get the message out that Canada’s environmental laws need strengthening, not weakening. We will continue to keep you informed, and we’ll need you to speak out again.
Although our website is back to normal, we will continue to speak out for nature and do what we do every day. That includes working to protect our rivers, our oceans, our climate and our communities.
Thank you again for supporting our work and please check out www.blackoutspeakout.ca regularly for campaign updates.
