Species of the week: The Grizzly Bear!

Grizzlies are notably strong and show remarkable endurance. However they have not been able to withstand human encroachment into their territories and today survive in only a fraction of their original North American range. One area where the grizzly does inhabit is the Great Bear region of British Columbia’s north coast, one of the world’s last intact temperate rainforests.

Why are the grizzly bears at risk?

  • Habitat loss due to human encroachment-as roads and industrial development change the landscape, the grizzly’s habitat is reduced.
  • Human interaction is happening more often before of habitat loss. Finding themselves with less space to roam, bears are forced to search for food closer to humans, with the end result often being the bear’s death, as it is viewed as a threat.
  • Hunting of grizzlies is still common, primarily for sport.

WWF is working to protect grizzly bears across their remaining range. One of the actions we are taking to ensure that wide-ranging species such as the grizzly bear have the vast spaces they need to survive is through our work to conserve B.C. estuaries, northern rivers and the Great Bear Sea.
